PI Coresight was renamed PI Vision in 2017
Marathon first started using the PI System in the Upstream O&G 2006 to address a tactical need to gather, archive, analyze, and visualize real-time data for remote operations in Equatorial Guinea off the coast of Africa. Over the last seven years, Marathon Oil's use of the PI System evolved into a strategic element of Marathon Oil's corporate sustainability vision. They define this as: "Building a more sustainable business requires wise investment, advanced technology and stewardship of the environment - Ultimately, sustainability means adapting to change."
Marathon Oil uses the PI System as an enterprise integration and applications infrastructure across their global portfolio of assets to address key business challenges such as:
-Integrating data from different control systems and data sources
-Providing remote asset monitoring and optimization for on shore, off shore, and drilling assets
-Supporting and integrating with Digital Oil Field initiatives
-Transferring operational data between JV partners
-Gathering and enabling knowledge management and transfer to newer technical professionals
-Integrating real-time data with modeling applications such as Kappa Diamant, Kappa Saphir, HYSYS, ECLIPSE
-Prioritizing workflows and highlighting problem areas by using advanced analytics and visualization capabilities
-Integrating metadata and providing asset based structure for improved information context
This presentation will show Marathon Oil's past, present, and future plans with the PI System. Three specific use cases will be used for illustration:
- Off-Shore: Equatorial Guinea - Remote Operations Monitoring and Conversion to a New Control system
- Off Shore: Droshky (Gulf of Mexico) - Integration, Modeling, and Data Sharing
- On Shore: Drilling Performance Management and Optimization; Minimization of "stick slip" and correlating drilling performance with formation, rock type, and rock strength
Of particular interest, the use of PI AF and PI Coresight, and how the PI System is supporting Marathon Oil's mobile strategy will be discussed.

Ken Startz
Ken Startz joined Marathon Oil at the Downstream Headquarters in Findlay, Ohio in 1979 after obtaining a B.S. degree in Computer Science from Miami University. Startz was involved in information, automation, and integration projects in Terminals, Transportation, and Refining including the first PI System installation at Marathon Oil in 1988 sold by Dr. Pat Kennedy. Over the next several years, Startz expanded his involvement with the PI System as Marathon Oil installed the PI System across the refining division.
In the early 2000s, Startz transferred to Marathon Oil’s upstream operations in Houston, Texas and has since been key in the adoption and evolution of the PI System across all of Marathon Oil’s global operations. He is currently leading Marathon Oil’s use of the PI System in onshore drilling and the related PI System based solution MaraDrill™ (Drilling Proof of Concept) which has improved the rate of penetration by 40%. He is a PI System thought leader and has pushed the envelope in the use of PI System features and functionality with a particular current focus on mobility.
