Food & Beverage Q&A Session - Enterprise-wide Process Optimization for Cargill
As part of Cargill’s continuous improvement journey, we invest in process control initiatives as a driver for process optimization with the goal of enhancing product yield and quality, and energy and water consumption, while adhering to safe operating limits.
One of the major challenges in implementing process control improvements is achieving long-term sustainability. Oftentimes performance of control improvements peak shortly after implementation and slips back to a sub-optimal level over time. We realized that, in order to sustain the gains from these initiatives, a control loop performance-monitoring solution (CLPM) was required.
Cargill partnered with Control Station to implement PlantESP, a CLPM solution, which leverages OSIsoft’s PI System to calculate loop performance metrics and provides visibility to a variety of users. Our talk will describe Cargill’s global deployment of PlantESP for plant-wide control loop monitoring at over 85 facilities across different businesses

Chris Christie
Chris Christie is the Refinery process Control Lead for GEOS, Cargill’s vegetable oils business. He received his BSc in Chemical & Process Engineering from the University of the West Indies and MEng and PhD from Virginia Tech. Chris has applied process systems engineering expertise across a broad range of industries including mineral mining and refining, global metals trading, biological control systems and agri-food processing. Recently, Chris was selected as one of Control Engineering Magazine’s 2018 Engineering Leaders Under 40.

Robert Rice
Bob Rice received his BS in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech, and his MS and PhD from the University of Connecticut. Bob currently serves as Control Station’s Vice President of Engineering. As the Company’s thought leader and chief product architect he oversees product development and engineering services. Bob has published extensively on topics associated with automatic process control, including multi-variable process control and model predictive control. Bob has also been the recipient of numerous ISA awards and was recognized by Control Engineering Magazine in the inaugural class of Engineering Leaders Under 40.
