First steps to building real-time visualizations of Alliander’s MV Grid using the PI-Esri ArcGIS Integrator
With the expected wide-scale introduction of Distributed Generation on one hand, and the of Electric Vehicle and Heat Pump loads on the other, the Energy Transition justifies data driven grid operations. Being The Netherlands’ largest Distribution System Operator, Alliander is currently at the verge of rolling out a vast amount of sensor and communication equipment in its Medium Voltage grid, in order to monitor the state of the grid continuously. The high volume of involved sensor data is to be visualized to operators in a way that its information value can be used to support operational decisions and customers services efficiently. At Alliander, we envision that a smart combination of real-time data and geospatial data is a key element of such a visualization. In the past year we used the PI ESRI ArcGIS Integrator to develop a number of prototypes.

Robin Hagemans, Gies Bouwman
Robin Hagemans MSc is responsible for Analytics programs, Innovations & data test beds at Alliander. He is a professional in the area of translating complex grid–related analytics into robust and scalable business solutions. He has a background in Analytics, Technical Automation & Telecommunications and was leading strategic programs as part of the entire Smart Grid Strategy for Alliander. Robin has his education in Statistical Engineering and Business Administration. The latter was focusing on how to use Innovation as a means for transforming businesses and the energy industry. Robin also holds a BSc in Process Engineering. With this background he works for Alliander on several solutions combining the real time, transactional and geographical worlds into analytics applications for Asset Management & Grid Management Business Decision Support based on combinations of IT & OT technology & expertise.
After obtaining a master’s degree in Computer Science in 1998, Gies worked at the Radboud University of Nijmegen as a scientific researcher in the area of Automatic Speech Recognition. From 2004 to 2011 he worked for a private company named Tensing, where he was responsible for GIS software development for national and international customers, mainly in the utilities industry. Since January 2012 Gies has been the architect of the PI System within the Livelab Programme. Livelab is Alliander’s real world learning environment, in which a wide variety of smart grid concepts are explored and tested."
