Experience using the PI System for Full-Featured Vibration Monitoring at Portland General Electric
Portland General Electric (PGE) Company is a vertically integrated, investor-owned energy utility in Northwest Oregon. It operates numerous generating facilities and has a diverse portfolio of 17 assets, including 400 wind turbines, 2 large hydro complexes, 4 combined-cycle plants, a coal-fired plant, which the company is retiring in 2020, and a network of solar facilities.
The OSIsoft PI System is used throughout PGE’s generating facilities as an operational data historian and in 2015, PGE became aware of new technology that would allow it to use its PI System for adding condition monitoring capabilities to its installed base of permanent vibration monitoring systems.
This case history explores how the technology was applied at PGE’s Beaver plant, a combined-cycle facility with seven gas turbines and one steam turbine.
PGE’s experience installing and using the system to date will be covered, along with the reasons a PI-based Condition Monitoring solution was so compelling.

Austin Curtis
Austin Curtis is a Maintenance Manager from Portland General Electric and has been with the company for nearly 5 years. He began his career as a Flight Test Engineer for the United States Air Force. During his four years of active duty he oversaw testing of the F-22 and C-17 Life support and HAVC subsystems. After separating from the Air Force as a Captain, he began working as a large Capital Project Manager for Barrick Gold where he oversaw a portfolio of several projects totaling $275 million. He began working for Portland General Electric in 2013 as a Mechanical Engineer focusing on thermal power plant reliability and capital improvements. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's Degree in Engineering Management.

Steve Sabin
Steve began his career in 1989 as a registered professional engineer in Canada, providing applications engineering support for vibration monitoring instrumentation. He was employed by Bently Nevada Corporation / GE Energy between 1989 and 2010, holding a variety of sales, marketing, and product development roles. He also served as executive editor of ORBIT magazine from 1995 until 2010 and has authored more than 100 articles, white papers, and technical documents pertaining to vibration monitoring instrumentation. In 2010, he left GE to become part of the team that developed the SETPOINT vibration system. In May 2017, SETPOINT was acquired by Bruel & Kjaer Vibro and Steve was promoted to his current role as Vice President of Marketing and Product Management. He has served as the secretary of American Petroleum Institute Standard 670 since 1996. Mr. Sabin received his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineer from Oregon State University in 1988, graduating summa cum laude. He is also a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Eta Kappa Nu engineering honor societies.
