Enterprise Value: How APS Creates Corporate Wide Benefits
Abstract APS had been using PI for many years. In 2015, APS began an Enterprise wide program to fully leverage PI and this has changed the way PI is deployed and used within the organization. Broadening the use of PI has unlocked value for end users both through the delivery of applications as well as improving the use of information. This paper will review the overall program and the impact that it is having at APS. In addition, we will review some specific examples of value creation within the Transmission and Distribution business. The paper will also reflect on key lessons learned to date and the plans going forward. Additional Presentation Information Business Challenges. Before entering into an Enterprise Agreement though, APS used PI in silos and end users had limited access to the data due to security rules. APS is also experiencing an explosion of data through the implementation of Advanced Grid Technologies. In parallel, an Enterprise Analytics program was launched and PI was selected as a foundational element for solid data acquisition, analysis and visualization. Details of the Solution. APS has implemented a variety of applications to enable end users to have direct access to EMS data as well as integrating Advanced Grid Technologies and making the information available for the T&D operations, planning and asset health organizations. These solutions are based on Asset Framework models and analysis as well as Coresight as a key tool for visualization. Results and Benefits. The initial solutions implemented have created value for APS and point to many areas of incremental value to be captured. These solutions enable operations to make use of fault indications to reduce the time to troubleshoot faults and reduce outages and provide continuous monitoring of key feeder parameters to improve situational awareness and enable the organization to be more proactive. Lessons Learned, Path Forward. An enterprise program requires a different approach to implementing and maintaining PI the systems and solutions implemented. These include a key focus on governance, working with the business, end user training and adoption. These lessons are being incorporated into the program going forward.
