Enabling a Resilient Water Supply System with the PI System Infrastructure
United Utilities helps life flow smoothly for 7 million people and 200,000 businesses in the North West of England by providing them with clean, fresh water every day. UU’s mission is to ensure that customers can rely on them for a great service and they are committed to providing services at a price customers can afford. UU recognized a need to improve the Production Planning functionality to leverage cost savings while managing the hydrological risks due to the UK’s variable weather. The previous system relied heavily on the experience and personal judgment of a few key employees. An appropriate analogy would be that of a pilot flying a plane with minimal instrumentation. Thus, UU decided to implement a fully integrated automatic system that uses the PI System as the data infrastructure and PI AF Server as the System Model. With the PI System, they “have moved from a pilot with a few instruments to a 747 pilot with a full range automatic monitoring and alarms and an auto pilot to assist.”
