Presentation: Data Concentration for 6,000 Distribution Devices to Facilitate Asset Optimization with the PI System

PPL Electric Utilities in eastern PA made a significant investment in FLISR over the past years across its electric distribution system. PPL installed thousands of overhead Reclosers to automate power restoration and reduce the impact and length of power interruptions. PPL leverages the electronic Recloser relay data to facilitate Asset Management inspection and maintenance goals. PPL deployed more than 6000 devices from various vendors, all of them configured to report DNP3 unsolicited data over a cellular network through the SUBNET system. The goal of this project was to connect SUBNET to the PI System to support key business cases leveraging maintenance data from the field devices to monitor diagnostic parameters. This project produced a high return on investment by providing engineers and asset management with rich data dashboards and the ability to build event frames to track FLISR performance and asset performance, which saves periodic inspection and maintenance costs.
