Paul will share his vision on the challenges of sharing data and how the PI System and PI Exchange Services helps Johnson & Johnson gain unprecedented visibility into a complicated supply chain. Janssen Supply Chain (JSC) supervises global supply chain management for Johnson & Johnson’s Pharmaceuticals business unit, which requires managing a complex of internal and external networks. He will describe how JSC meets the infrastructure challenges to manufacturing high quality pharmaceuticals. This entails keeping costs under control while meeting environmental, health and safety, and sustainability requirements. JSC has achieved this by strong coordination of a diverse set of internal and external resources. Visibility up and down the supply chain is crucial and is achieved through information exchange.

Paul McKenzie
As the Vice President of Manufacturing and Technical Operations (MTO) for Janssen Supply Chain (JSC), Paul McKenzie, Ph.D. leads the JSC internal manufacturing and External Supply Integration (ESI) functions within the JSC. Under Paul’s leadership the manufacturing organization is clearly prioritizing JSC’s reliability and technical initiatives across the internal and external network – leveraging resources where appropriate and ensuring equal emphasis on assets in terms of quality, service and cost. In addition to internal and external manufacturing, the Environmental Health & Safety, Sustainability and Crucell functions also report into Paul.
Paul joined Johnson & Johnson in 2008 as the Head of Bio-Pharmaceutical Development & Manufacturing Support where he was responsible for end-to-end technical support for both the development and commercial portfolio for Centocor. In 2009, he assumed responsibility for a newly formed group, Pharmaceutical Development and Manufacturing Sciences (PDMS), which was accountable to develop, commercialize and support new molecular entities across their entire product lifecycle for both small and large molecules. In his most recent role as Head of the Global Development Organization of Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies, Paul was responsible for driving value creation and increasing R&D operational effectiveness across clinical development operations, pharmaceutical development, clinical pharmacology and drug safety sciences. Through close interactions with the therapeutic and functional area leaders, as well as with supply chain and external partners, Paul’s team contributed to the development and successful approval of life changing medicines to patients around the world.
Prior to Johnson & Johnson, Paul worked for Bristol-Myers Squibb as Vice President and General Manager of the large-scale cell culture facility, as well as Vice President, Technical Transfer Governance Committee. Prior to BMS, Paul worked for Merck in various roles with the company’s large-scale organic pilot plant and Pharmaceutical Development & Clinical Supply pilot plants.
Paul is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania (B.S. in Chemical Engineering) and Carnegie Mellon University (Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering). He is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Illinois Institute of Technology and the Board of the Society for Biological Engineering. He has served on numerous professional and academic boards.
In his spare time, Paul enjoys supporting his children in their academic and athletic pursuits. All of his kids enjoy competitive swimming and that has led Paul to become certified as a YMCA and USA swimming coach and official. Paul still competes himself in both masters swimming and water polo. When not at a pool for a swim meet, Paul and his family enjoy spending the summer weekends with their extended family at the New Jersey coast.
