Data... Information... Decision-Making: Tackling the Sustainable Energy Management Conundrum
Energy-saving initiatives and technologies have been around for many years, with mixed success. Sustaining energy initiative benefits has been difficult. This is primarily due to the complex nature of the drivers behind a process site's energy consumption. It is a multi-aspect problem; operations, maintenance, technology and culture all play a part. There is no single bolt-on solution. In looking for a solution, the importance of process data is now recognized—from benchmarking to operational target-setting and asset-monitoring. A real-time data infrastructure and a modeling and analysis toolkit are also vital elements in the solution search. But, that's not all. We have moved a long way in recent years, turning data into information. The key challenge now is figuring out how to exploit that information to drive business decision-making. This presentation focuses on experiences in developing energy management projects based in process data and the issues raised behind achieving sustainable success.

David specialises in energy management and process control services for the oil, gas and petrochemical industries and their supplier companies. As a former Subject Matter Expert for Energy Management Systems for the Shell Group, David developed the worldwide standards and energy management work processes for Shell operating companies.
David is a highly respected engineer in the fields of energy management, process control and operations decision support techniques. In a 32-year career with the Shell Group of companies, he has held senior leadership positions in these areas and has played an influential role in the identification, development and rollout of many of Shell's tools and technologies in these fields. He is a former keynote speaker at previous OSIsoft Users Conferences.
