Creating Real-time Situational Awareness Across Your Entire Wind Operations

  • In 2010, Edison Mission Energy worked with OSIsoft and Versify Solutions to implement technologies and processes that added additional real-time insight to plant availability and outage events. These technologies provided automated communications between operations, dispatch and the trade floor. Attendees will learn how real-time analysis made available across the enterprise can:

    Increase revenue from a wind fleet by decreasing the time between turbine shutoff and reset
    Drive accurate unit commitment for 1 to 7 day forecasts
    Increase revenue by optimizing plant participation in the power trade markets

    Business challenge:

    EME needed additional insight into plant availability and outage events in day-ahead and real-time situations, particularly accurate unit commitment for 1 to 7-day forecasts. Additionally, EME needed more real-time data from the plant for insight into turbine availability and turbine faults as they occurred. Internal efforts to implement systems were beneficial, but EME needed external expertise and solutions to make information more robust.

    Solution implemented:

    With the help of OSIsoft and Versify Solutions, EME implemented a unit commitment application, which provides the plants with an intuitive interface to enter and communicate information directly to dispatch and the trading floor. Additionally, we configured and implemented real-time dashboards and status screens with supporting automated processes to inform EME operations, dispatch and trading, of turbine status or shutoff and enable automated communication regarding turbine availability. The initial implementation for 30 wind farms was completed in approximately three months.

    Results achieved by implementing these solutions and services:

    EME is able increase revenue from their wind fleet, and has already realized a 2-percent increase from a single wind farm by decreasing the time to identify a turbine shutoff and get the turbine reset/restarted.
    EME has the potential to increase revenue by optimizing plant participation in the power market to capitalize on market pricing opportunities through consistent awareness of their current production capability.

Scott Marion

Scott Marion has been in the energy industry for over 20 years. Scott began his career at Michigan Consolidated Gas Company in Detroit as a Two-Way Radio / Mobile Data Technician where he gained his first exposure to the world of real-time communications, including installation and maintenance of RTU's and Fixed Data Solutions. In 1999, Scott took on a new position as System Administrator for MichCon's Natural Gas SCADA System monitoring over 3600 miles of natural gas pipeline within the State of Michigan. In this role, Scott gained extensive experience supporting Michcon's Natural Gas Transmission, Storage, and Distribution business units. Throughout his career at MichCon (now DTE Energy), Scott performed roles of ever increasing responsibility, including Principal Analyst, IT Governance, Supervisor, Software Engineering and Staffing, and finally IT Portfolio Manager Energy Gas where he lead a team of Project Managers, Business Analysts and Technical Support resources responsible for capital IT projects and daily support. In 2010, Scott relocated to Boston to work for Edison Mission Marketing and Trading, overseeing projects and supporting their real-time applications, including their Generation Management System, NERC-CIP Compliance, the PI System and related data sources.
