Collect the Data and Make It Pay!
A large electrical power generating plant that produced 30% of the electricity of Las Vegas wanted to improve transformer reliability and increase power output. We designed a PI system that collected data from complex real time hydrogen gas sensors. Within 4 days, the PI system was collecting data from all distribution transformers on this 430K sq ft. plant. Within 30 days, the monitoring system revealed that one transformer was operating abnormally – long before the abnormality caused a power outage. We performed corrective action quickly, prevented a power outage, and repaired the transformer while it remained in service. This talk presents a strategy for quick and inexpensive deployment of Condition Based Maintenance.

Greg's background is information systems engineer; he has 25 years experience in interfacing real time systems to data bases at ROLM, IBM and Siemens. Greg has four patents and five publications. Greg graduated from NYU/Polytechnic Institute of New York.

Andy Gaither is a Plant Staff Engineer for Nevada Energy. Andy directs capital projects for Arrow Valley Generation Complex, which provides 30% of the power for Las Vegas. Andy was selected as one of 15 corporate Continuous Improvement Program Champions. Andy is a Nuclear Power Engineer for the US Navy. Andy graduated from the University of Nevada – Reno with a BS-EE degree, with distinction.
