In this talk, Dave and Joel will be presenting the role of a Data Infrastructure in relation to a City’s physical infrastructure. The talk will explore how the OSIsoft PI System connects, acquires, stores, contextualizes and presents highly granular time series data across entire city-scapes and will showcase a key use cases and real-world examples of leveraging a city-scale PI System. Microsoft will also present their CityNext program which OSIsoft is proud to be a lead partner in. The significant role the PI System plays in delivering a city-wide platform for sustainability and economic development for CityNext will also be discussed.

Joel Cherkis
Joel Cherkis is the general manager of Government Sales within the Worldwide Public Sector division at Microsoft Corp. Harnessing an extensive background in technology, Cherkis leads a team of sales and technology professionals who provide global strategic support to government customers by delivering solutions that are focused on providing citizen-based services and enabling government workplace and datacenter modernization. He works in close collaboration with governments and Microsoft partners around the world to ensure that Microsoft’s software and cloud services deliver the level of insight and accountability their constituents expect.
Cherkis, who joined Microsoft in 2004, most recently served as the chief technology officer and general manager for the Worldwide Technology Office, Public Sector and as general manager of the U.S. Government Solutions team, where he supported industry solutions focused on health and human services, justice and public safety, homeland security, Department of Defense initiatives, e-government, and emerging technologies.
Before joining Microsoft, Cherkis spent nine years at Oracle Corp. where he served as a worldwide technical instructor teaching database design, architecture, and data modeling before he moved on to developing technologies that enabled governments and corporations to build efficient applications that lowered their overall ownership and operation costs. Cherkis began his career as an application developer with Mobil Oil Corp. where he developed mainframe- and midrange-based applications that managed refinery, pipeline, and product packaging systems in addition to helping develop the company’s global customer accounting systems.
With more than 20 years of IT and software development experience, Cherkis has spent the past 10 years helping customers and partners better utilize collaborative solutions and the processes of infrastructure consolidation while staying focused on understanding how and when technology should be used to solve government problems.
Cherkis has a bachelor of business administration degree in computer information systems with a concentration in decision support systems from James Madison University. A native of Washington, D.C., Cherkis is an avid skier and mountain bike rider and enjoys spending time with his family and taking advantage of the outdoor recreational amenities the Pacific Northwest has to offer.

Dave Roberts
As an OSIsoft Fellow, Mr. Roberts' area of research and market development focuses on high-penetration renewable energy, examining market based solutions to absorb intermittent energy on the distribution grid. He is the executive sponsor for OSIsoft’s projects in Microgrids, City Scale Demand Response and Load Shifting. Further he is responsible for OSIsoft’s “Data Infrastructure for Physical Infrastructures” approach to Smart Cities on a global basis.
Prior to being promoted to OSIsoft Fellow, as Global Vice President for Business Development, Mr. Roberts managed OSIsoft’s various vertical industries, including Power, Transmission & Distribution, Oil & Gas, Metals&Mining, Chemicals, Pharmaceutical and other process industries. Mr. Roberts is also OSIsoft’s Industry Principal for Renewable Power Generation, and participates in many industry thought leadership groups including American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), Utility Wind Integration Group (UWIG) and most recently Sandia National Labs and the US Department of Energy. He remains very active in the renewable energy industry, and works on both private and public sector initiatives regarding high-penetration renewable energy scenarios.
Prior to joining OSIsoft, he worked for wind power developer, owner and operator, SeaWest WindPower. As the Vice President Project Development for SeaWest, he was responsible for the development of hundreds of megawatts of wind farms in the western US. Following this role, Mr. Roberts became SeaWest’s Senior Vice President of Strategy and Planning, leading to the eventual sale of SeaWest to the AES Corporation in 2005. During this period, SeaWest started-up and owned Prasentia, LLC. Mr. Roberts served as President of Prasentia, defining product and service strategies, launching the business, and conducting commercial transactions with end-use customers. Prasentia’s main business was the development and implementation of Real-Time Wind Farm Management Systems, including Wind Farm SCADA systems and Management/Enterprise Level systems. Prasentia, and its Intellectual Property, were acquired by AES in the SeaWest transaction.
Mr. Roberts holds a B.A. International Relations from the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and an M.B.A. International Management from the Fisher Graduate School of Business at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.
