Asset Management, Decision Making and Counter/Condition Based Maintenance at PSE&G
PSE&G has over U$1B of installed plants with a replacement cost of multi-billions; the average age of its assets exceeds 40 years; all equipment is in continuous use; maintenance expenditures erode earnings; capital replacement generates no new revenue. PSE&G maintenance has evolved over the years from simply reacting to machinery breakdowns through performing time-based Preventative Maintenance to today’s emphasis on detecting early forms of degradation in predictive, counter/condition based maintenance. This presentation describes how PSE&G has utilized the PI System to implement a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) by correlating the real-time transmission and distribution operational data, along with substation non-operational equipment health data, diagnostic and work management data and turning the these data into actionable intelligence. With the PI innovative technology and enterprise infrastructure existing within the organization, PSE&G was able to leverage the enterprise-standard, out-of-the-box PI analytical and visualization tools to create flexible, scalable and powerful CBM applications, and transform the data into actionable information, then present the intelligence in a KPI-dashboard SharePoint web portal form for senior management and field users. Significance: The presentation demonstrates techniques to perform the right maintenance at the right time based on the consistent analysis of data, thus ensuring a safe, reliable, and cost effective approach.

Richard Wernsing
Dick Wernsing is currently the Reliability Centered Maintenance Expert at PSE&G. His responsibilities include strategic long-range asset management focusing on electric distribution, substation and transmission equipment, using risk and gap analysis, reliability centered maintenance, life cycle cost techniques and financial and operational metrics to improve and achieve performance measures. The extensive knowledge and technical expertise Mr. Wernsing acquired during 40 years at PSE&G in the delivery, transmission and production of electricity, computer and telecommunications support, has enabled him to develop a PI System-based Computerized Maintenance Management System that provides Condition and Criticality Assessment on all major inside plant equipment, transformers, breakers and relays. It leverages a wireless work management system to collect real time information from inspection crews. Mr. Wernsing began his career at PSE&G as a Substation Mechanic and has held management positions in Operations, Maintenance and Asset Management supporting both energy management systems and work management.
