Asset Maintenance and Condition Assessment
Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) is a New Jersey-based utility company that serves over 2.2 million electric customers and 1.8 million gas customers. In 1994 PSE&G made the front page of regional newspapers when an outage shut down Newark Airport. In response, PSE&G rolled out a centralized computerized maintenance manager program (CMMS) in 2002 that correlated data to the assets within a substation and used algorithms to determine asset health. The program collects data from various sources, correlates the data down to the asset and runs condition based maintenance (CBM) algorithms to determine the poorest performing and troubling assets. Before the present Asset Management CMMS strategy was implemented, most of the substation issues involving gassing and excessive moisture would have resulted in asset failure.
After Super Storm Sandy hit in 2012, PSE&G decided to upgrade their CMMS as part of an Energy Strong (ES) initiative to protect and strengthen electric and gas systems against severe weather conditions. Because each server had its own function, if any server went offline, the entire environment was not of use to end users. With the upgrade, PSE&G will improve PI System availability and functionality across multiple servers. This will provide real-time loading data to distribution planners, use more real-time data to assess distribution substation asset health, and avoid momentary outages. For the past 13 years, the CMMS substation has helped PSE&G avoid asset failure and extend asset life with over $80 million in cost savings to date and expected ongoing annual cost savings of $2-3 million."

Angela Rothweiler is currently the Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) Expert within the Electric Asset Strategy group at PSE&G. Her responsibilities include maintaining and enhancing the CMMS. This role includes condition-based maintenance and asset risk management, building new interfaces into the CMMS, documenting the CMMS, troubleshooting alarms, and enforcing standard operation procedures. In her 12 years with PSE&G, she has focused on data integration and condition-based maintenance programs. She has a Master’s Degree in Software Engineering.

Paloma has worked 8+ years with clients in the energy and utility industry, including oil and gas, power generation, and renewables in the US, Canada, and Latin America. Prior to Accenture, Paloma worked at OSIsoft for several years, and her roles included: software quality analyst, technical support, field service engineer, and enterprise project manager. As a consultant at Accenture, she was involved in delivering an IT e-commerce transformational project for Cisco Systems, Inc. and PI System-based projects at Dominion and Public Service Enterprise Group, among others.
