Advanced Real-time Situational Awareness for Synchrophasors - Faster than the Eye, Not faster than PI
At 60HZ and higher data rates, new phasor measurement units (PMUs) used in power grid monitoring can produce vast quantities of data at an alarming rate. So much so that in its raw form, even experienced human eyes are not able to glean actionable information from it in real time. The data’s value is hidden within relationships between time-correlated measurements, collected across wide geographical areas. Subtle oscillations occurring within the power harmonics and phase angle differences can help to expose instability, among other conditions. Advanced analysis is necessary to tease out useful information using a system of relationships and high speed data.
Everyone knows that PI is fast. PI Interfaces can collect high speed data, but what about processing it continuously in real time? Using the new PI server 2012 and AF-SDK 2012, Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) in collaboration with OSI partner Casne Engineering, WECC and MontanaTech University have shown that advanced data analysis is indeed feasible on top of high speed PI Data. Significant real-time situational awareness applications are being deployed into the NW US grid, allowing a level of awareness as never before, including:
- Early Warning Oscillation Dampening Detection
- Multi-Frequency Oscillation detection - Power Islanding
- Voltage Angle Alarming
We will be showing some of the extendable plug-in analysis architecture using the latest AF-SDK as well present the PI-centered roadmap forward.

Kliff Hopson
Kliff Hopson first started working with the PI System in 2000 when it was adopted as the historian for the power plant at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks. He worked at UAF for 18 years, where his role as the PI System administrator gave him the experience he needed to escape the frigid clutches of the sub-arctic. Since October of 2012 he has been working for the Bonneville Power Administration in the ridiculously pleasant environment of Vancouver, WA. His role at BPA is to implement and administer the new High Availability PI System for Synchrophasor data. His first user conference was in 2002 and he still drinks coffee from the OSIsoft mug he received at that conference.
