PRESENTATION
2018 - PI World - San Francisco - Academic Symposium
Panel Discussion: Student Engagement with Real-World Data
Panelists will discuss how they have challenged undergraduate students to solve engineering problems using real-world data. The discussion will highlight the value to students as well as the value to the project-sponsor organizations. Panelists will also share tips and tricks for designing, enabling, and supporting these collaborative projects.
Panelists include:
George Paterson, Manager, Energy Control Center at University of Iowa
Pratt Rogers, Assistant Professor, Mining Engineering at University of Utah
Steve Moore, Instructor, Process Technology at Del Mar College

George Paterson
George Paterson has managed the University of Iowa’s Energy Control Center since its inception in 2011. He has worked for the University’s Utilities & Energy Management department for 22 years where he has applied his studies in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science to automate the collection and analysis of real-time energy data from across the campus. The Energy Control Center was the first such endeavor of its kind in a University setting and the recipient of the 2012 Innovative and Effective Practices award from APPA. The center is also used to educate students about the University’s energy systems and has collaborated on energy research projects with the College of Engineering Intelligent Systems Laboratory and the National Institute of Science and Technology.

Steve Moore
Steve Moore is an Instructor for the Process Technology Department at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. He started his career in “Process” back in 1987 with TRW Environmental as a field operator of a three stage centrifuge operation. He finished his career with them as a Site Superintendent in 1991. Steve hired on with Citgo Refining in mid-1991 and spent the majority of his working life there. Like all new hires, he started in the field but soon realized that his niche was at the control room console. It was in 1993 that Steve first sat on a console and from that time forward he was hooked. He spent the next six years dividing his time between the console and outside duties in a Hydrotreater, a Sulfur Recovery unit and a Merox unit. In 1999 he was chosen to showcase his skills in the newly built Centralized Control Room where he operated a Crude/Vacuum unit, a Utilities block, a Coker/Gas Concentration unit and a Waste Water unit.
