Lightning Round Talks: OSIsoft Call for Collaboration – 1st Year Innovation Showcase
In rapid fire, this session will provide summaries of projects referred to as Calls for Collaboration which are projects developed and produced by summer interns with assistance from their university professors and OSIsoft mentors utilizing OSIsoft’s PI System. The sessions covers projects completed in 2017 along with those being planned for the summer of 2018.

Ashkan Negahban, Assistant Professor of Engineering Management
Pennsylvania State University
Ashkan will discuss a new collaboration between The Pennsylvania State University and OSIsoft that aims at leveraging the available big data on Penn State buildings at The Philadelphia Navy Yard to: (1) create a comprehensive, open-source database of validated data as the foundation for subsequent analysis in this project and to facilitate research on energy efficient buildings for other researchers and practitioners; (2) develop novel statistical and data visualization tools to analyze historical data, monitor real-time performance, and facilitate scheduling and fault detection; and, (3) develop agent-based simulation models to predict occupancy and energy consumption, generate expected demand-response scenarios, and enable effective load planning not only at the building level, but also at the grid level using the data provided by the Navy Yard’s network operating center.

Denis Grancanin, Associate Professor of Computer Science
Virginia Tech
In 2018, Virginia Tech will compete in the Solar Decathlon Middle East as the only U.S.-based team in a competitive pool of 21 universities worldwide. The team won the Solar Decathlon Europe in 2010 with LumenHAUS. With FutureHAUS Dubai, Virginia Tech builds on 16 years of faculty-student research in solar home design, modular construction, and smart home technology. The Computer & Electrical engineering team will be using OSIsoft IoT edge computer technology with MQTT - Message Queuing Telemetry Transport along with OMF - OSIsoft Message Format to bring an array of occupancy sensor data into the PI System.

Frank Lee
Frank Lee held the position of Customer Support Intern at OSIsoft San Leandro, CA office during the summer of 2017. During this period, Frank conceived of a project for real-time monitoring of buses on the UC Davis Campus. He was able to gain support from the university and OSIsoft partners to provide access to the bus and equipment needed to outfit the bus for real-time data collection to The PI System. One at the PI System, Frank configured geospatial and operational views with notifications of bus errors to alert depot workers and dispatchers.
Frank will receive his BS Electrical Engineering in 2019 from UC Davis and is considering a MS in Electrical Engineering.
