Offshore drilling is an activity known for the several challenges and risks that when not well managed can end up in a catastrophic situation. Recent technology discoveries have made drilling much safer than ever, but economic cycles bring another variable to the table. To succeed in the current market, drillers need to be safer, more reliable and more efficient. This paper will show how Ensco, thru the Ensco Predictive Intelligence Center (EPIC), has started its digital transformation journey targeting operational excellence.
The PI system plays a key role in this process acting as the main data repository, receiving raw data as well as outputs from machine learning and complex analytics. However, comparing results and trends in a very cyclical business, such as offshore drilling, is always a challenge. This presentation will give examples of how Ensco utilizes PI Event Frames to analyse and evaluate the condition of the assets and the efficiency of operations.

Diego Mercadal
Diego Mercadal is a Mechanical Engineer with a M.Sc. in Statistics who currently works as a Data Scientist at ENSCO PLC. Started his career as a commissioning engineer for synchronous high voltage motors and generators. Joined ENSCO 7 years ago as an offshore rig hand and worked in several positions inside the drilling Crew. Moved to the office to work in the Ensco Predictive Intelligence Center where uses his field experience combined with the latest technologies and techniques for statistical modeling and data analysis. Currently works developing predictive models using time series and static data in order to predict anomalies and increase up-time and productivity in offshore drilling Rigs.
