Habits of a Highly Effective Problem Solver (IP)
Goldielocks could have been a highly effective problem solver as she tested various techniques before selecting the right bed (or tool) for the job. Asking the right questions and selecting the right tool for the job are required to get to the correct answer at the lowest effort and cost. The talk demonstrates how to select the right OSISoft tool for the job using examples from the paper industry. Examples include monitoring tank levels across a facility, optimizing energy usage across a region and/or enterprise and organizing recovery boiler data. Sometimes we need fast simple solutions to troubleshoot problems based on recent events (tank levels) while other times we need a more robust solution with simpler interfaces to get actionable data to non-traditional PI users (energy buyers).

Richard Smith
Rick Smith is a Chemical Engineer with 35 years of paper industry experience. His career has always been focused around process control, process data and mill information systems. His focus has long been to get the data to the decision makers to improve product quality and company profitability. Rick has worked with the PI system since the ‘90’s and spend a lot of time in the past five years educating new hires on methods for retrieving process data to solve day-to-day problems.
